Our Commitment:
Pallet Wine Company is committed to reducing, recycling and re-using whenever and wherever possible. All solid waste from wine production will be composted, used on adjacent grounds and offered to community gardeners. Water usage is minimized through application of steam and high pressure for cleaning, and toxic chemicals or solvents are banned. Modern lighting fixtures and electrical systems were installed for maximum efficiency and to take advantage of the building’s natural lighting and cool cellar areas.
LEED Certification Program:
Pallet Wine Co. is currently pursuing LEED certification (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design). Our goal is not only to be the first winery in the Rogue Valley with this accolade, but to be the first of many. To our delight, we found LEED credits us for the re-use of the Historic Cooley Neff building, for being centrally located in an Urban area, not to mention our use of recycled building materials during the project. LEED quantifies our good faith in attempting to build ethically and in environmentally friendly way.
Highlights and surprises from our building project include realizing the potential cost both monetarily and on the environment had we elected to artificially cool a room the size of our wine cellar. As is, our wine is protected from the wild fluctuations in Medford temperatures by being located in a humid, naturally cooled cellar.
Another pleasant surprise came in realizing the value of our construction ‘waste.’ Timbers pulled from the floor when we poured the crush pad concrete we discovered were highly coveted and will beautify our future tasting room.
Working closely with LEED accredited professionals, Ogden Roemer Wilkerson Architecture AIA (http://www.orwarchitecture.com) we hope to be an officially certified project by 2010 and are more than happy to help any other entity looking to build towards LEED certification.
ReCORK America:
the program is focused on obtaining used and surplus corks from winery tasting rooms, bottling lines and quality assurance laboratories.
